After Action Reviews (AAR)

An After Action Review (AAR) is a structured process designed to evaluate the actions, decisions, and outcomes of a specific event, operation, or training exercise. It facilitates a comprehensive analysis of performance, allowing teams to recognize successes, identify areas for improvement, and enhance future responses. By fostering collaborative discussion, an AAR supports continuous learning, improving preparedness, response strategies, and operational efficiency to ensure better outcomes for future emergencies and challenges

Why AARs Matter

  • Assess Performance – Review what went well and what didn’t.
  • Improve Future Responses – Identify ways to enhance preparedness and decision-making.
  • Encourage Collaboration – Gather feedback from all involved to strengthen teamwork.
  • Ensure Accountability – Address mistakes constructively and refine strategies.

Key Questions in an AAR

  1. What was supposed to happen? (Planned objectives)
  2. What actually happened? (Reality vs. expectations)
  3. What went well? (Successes to repeat)
  4. What could be improved? (Challenges and lessons learned)
  5. What actions will be taken? (Steps for improvement)

For SARVAC HWF Responders

AARs are critical for disaster and emergency response. They help SARVAC’s Humanitarian Workforce:

  • Improve coordination during evacuations and disaster relief.
  • Strengthen training and response protocols.
  • Identify resource or communication gaps.
  • Build a more resilient and prepared response team.

Final Thought

AARs turn experience into action. By learning from every operation, SARVAC HWF responders can continually improve, stay prepared, and deliver better support in future emergencies.
